Another great event was held in 2005. We had a
record number of 26 cooks and the public came to taste all types
of the 41 different chilies. Along with the usual annual competition
between local restaurants and amateurs for the best chili, we
held the first Chili
Appreciation Society International event (CASI)
in South Carolina.
We estimate there were 1,200 people who
enjoyed this fall Saturday afternoon. All the money raised
will go toward our Kiwanis charities. CASI Winners were awarded points and could possibly
compete in the international chili cookoff in 2006.

rules Honey Horn is still a great location for
our events and is located on the North end of the island where
the Cross Island Parkway meets William Hilton Parkway. Click

of how to find Honey Horn.

One ticket allows you to eat as much chili as you like.
Beverages are extra. Anti-acids are provided by Burkes
Pharmacy. Advanced tickets are
$8.50 and available through any Kiwanis
member, Burke's Pharmacy, The Coastal Discovery Museum,
The Internet Cafe in Coligny Plaza
or any location of NBSC or Wachovia bank. Tickets are also available at
the door for $10.00. "Low Country Boil" will
provide musical entertainment. Other events planned include
the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Indent-a-kid trailer,
the fire department and other local charitable organizations.
When all the people ate as much chili as they could, the
leftover chili was donated to Second Helpings Food Bank. About
150 pounds of chili did not go to waste and has gone to people
who can appreciate this great food. There are two types of
judging for the local competition. First, the general public is
allowed to vote for the
best chili; and there is a group of honorable judges selected
to determine the best chili in both professional and amateur
categories. For the CASI competition, judges use a
determined set of criteria to decide the best chili and
this is blind judging. Not until the judging is complete, do
we know who has the best chili.
